As a marketer, data has always interested me - especially when it reveals shifting cultural conversations.

In the past year, searches for 'life after sports' have more than doubled worldwide.

And it's not just a viral spike.

I've been curating a knowledge hub of 4,000+ athlete stories including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Two hashtags dominate:
#lifeaftersports - 40,000+ uses
#formerathlete - 31,000+ uses

When athletes use these hashtags, they're talking about raw, intimate feelings, challenges, and experiences.

But I wondered - if they're tagging their posts this way, are they also searching for this information?

So I checked Google Trends:
• 'Life after sports' searches: +108% from July 2024 to July 2025
• 'Former athlete' searches: +79% in the same period
• Interest now showing in 44+ countries
• 18+ months of steady growth - no spike-and-crash patterns

Looking at 20 years of search history, both terms were flat until around 2020. There were a few pandemic-era bumps for 'former athlete,' but this recent growth feels different - more sustained, more global.

Why now?

My hunch: Current athletes normalizing mental health conversations has given retired athletes permission to finally address transition struggles they may have carried in silence.

Think Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, DeMar DeRozan - seeing active pros prioritize mental health may have made people realize their own struggles weren't just "normal adjustment."

Permission to struggle is the first step to healing.

What do you think is behind it? In your world, are more former athletes talking openly about life after sport? Hit reply and let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,

Kyle
